Patom Organic Living for the Welfare of Chickens in Thailand
Patom Organic Living collaborates with World Animal Protection
to elevate local organic farm standards in line with agreed farmed animal welfare standards while also promoting awareness of higher-welfare meat products and plant-based protein consumption in Thailand.
Change is being made throughout the supply chain by Patom Organic Living. The project's upstream efforts aim to establish a higher-welfare chicken farm model as well as an organic farm growing fruit and vegetable produce for plant-based recipes. Its midstream focus is on developing products that can serve as protein alternatives and higher-welfare meat dishes for Bangkok consumers. Downstream, the project expands public knowledge by raising awareness through its sales and marketing of higher-welfare animal products and predominantly plant-based diets.
Kid Dee Farm: Changing Chickens’ Lives
Kid Dee chicken farm represents a significant effort to enact change across the farming industry. It serves as a pilot farm that implements improved farmed animal welfare standards while adhering to its current organic standard (Ratchburi Farmer PGS-local). Furthermore, the project aims to encourage other farms within the Sampran Model Network to adopt the same standard. In addition, it collaborates with Suranaree University to scale up the higher-welfare chicken model nationwide.
The farm is designed to fit the natural behavior of chickens. Chickens older than six weeks are allowed to roam freely in their environment and are raised on a diet that consists of rice and corn as sources of carbohydrates, as well as soybeans, mung beans, and fish as sources of protein. Chicken manure also produces natural plankton which could also be fish food. As a result, the farm uses renewable resources and generates less waste.
The chickens are kept healthy by blending Thai herbs into their feed to boost immunity, which avoids the use of antibiotics. Additionally, environmental enrichment is provided, such as bottles of water for pecking, straw bales, sand, and perches to reduce stress and aggression.
Patom Organic Farm: Promoting Organic Produce
Patom Organic Living established Patom Organic Farm as a supplier of organic products. The farm grows certified organic fruits, vegetables and herbs, and sells these ingredients to chefs, restaurants, and partners—both within the Patom network and beyond. This initiative aims to increase demand for plant-based diets and decrease reliance on animal products.
Furthermore, the farm offers educational opportunities to communities, emphasizing the environmental benefits of organic farming, plant-based consumption, and animal welfare standards.
Through their efforts, Patom Organic Living is making a social, environmental, and economic impact on their communities. With each step forward, Patom Organic Living inspires and contributes to the possibility of an ethical, humane and sustainable food system.
